Veterans Affairs

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the largest federal provider of healthcare. Its peer review program is a critical element of quality management and demonstrates the VA’s commitment to providing the highest quality care possible for veterans. In 2019, the VA awarded iMPROve Health a multi-million-dollar peer review contract.

We conduct specialty clinical peer review on more than 150 patient-care cases monthly, using the VA’s Electronic Health Record system and standardized reporting templates to conduct each review. A reviewer of the same specialty studies the case and provides objective clinical expertise to determine if the care provided reflects established standards, consistent with current literature and practice guidelines. Consistent with our URAC accreditation, our reviewers are credentialed through our robust, state-of-the-art credentialing software program. Prior to onboarding, all VA reviewers are required to complete fingerprinting and a background check.

iMPROve Health is a partner with the Connecticut Department of Correction (CTDOC), performing retrospective reviews of untimely death files (documentation of medical and mental healthcare) to determine proximate cause of death and the appropriateness of the CTDOC’s response as compared to national correctional healthcare standards and the department’s policies. This major correctional healthcare contract demonstrates our ability to diversify our portfolio of healthcare service lines.

Starting in the fall of 2022, more details about and outcomes from this partnership will be available in the following year.

Since January 2019, iMPROve Health has reviewed more than 4,500 Emergency Department medical records for quality checks at a critical access hospital located in the western United States. We have tracked a steady increase in the rate of ‘appropriate’ quality, from 85% in 2019 to 92% in 2022. iMPROve Health participates virtually in the hospital’s quarterly Quality Assurance conferences.

iMPROve Health provides Informal Dispute Resolution (IDR) and Independent Informal Dispute Resolution (IIDR) services to state agencies. In 2021, we reviewed more than 1,100 citations to review. On average, our turnaround time was 15 calendar days per case.
